William Varney of Ipswich, Essex County Massachusetts and Some of his Descendants

 Last Updated 11 March, 2008

Generation No. 1

@1.  William1 Varney died Abt. 01 March 1653/54 in Ipswich, Essex County Massachusetts1.  He married Bridget Knight2 04 May 1629 in Barbados, West Indies.  She died 25 October 1672 in Gloucester, Essex County Massachusetts3.

Notes for William Varney:

There is some material written (as yet unsubstantiated by the compiler) that indicates that William was born in Buckinghamshire England and traveled to Barbados about 1629, where he married Bridget Knight and lived for 25 years, and had all his children.  He came to New England about 1654, and seemed to have divided his time between Dover New Hampshire and Ipswich Massachusetts.

William died intestate shortly before 28 March 1654.  The Essex County Probate Court  record mentions wife Bridget, three sons and 1 daughter4.

Notes for Bridget Knight:

Unlike her husband William Varney, Bridget left a detailed will behind, proved 27 November 1672 at Essex Probate Court.  In it, she mentions her son Humphrey, son Jeffrey Parsons,  daughter Rachel (wife of William Vinson) and son Thomas Varney6.  Torrey suggests that Bridget's maiden name may have been Knight.

In her will, Bridget mentions a son Jeffrey Parsons, and this has been the source of much controversy surrounding the origins of Jeffrey Parsons, first of that name to settle in Cape Ann.  According to Parsons family records, Jeffrey left England for Barbados with an uncle and then on to New England, leaving a brother James who died there in 1708.  Willis Parsons, in a 1988 article in the New England Historical and Genealogical Register writes that Parsons family is from Loddiswell in Devonshire5.  However, there is no genealogical evidence for a connection between these Parsons and either the Varney or Knight family in England.    It is possible but unlikely that Bridget married a Parsons previous to her marriage to William Varney; not possible that she married a Parsons after William's death, since she was called Bridget Varney when she died.

Children of William Varney and Bridget Knight are:

Generation No. 2

@2.  Rachel2 Varney (William1) was born Abt. 16307, and died 15 February 1707/08 in Gloucester, Essex County Massachusetts8.  She married (1) Thomas Cooke.  He was born in of Ipswich, Essex County Massachusetts, and died Bef. 17 September 1650 in Ipswich, Essex County Massachusetts9.  She married (2) Joseph Langton10 26 July 1652 in Ipswich, Essex County Massachusetts10.  He died Bef. 10 June 1661.  She married (3) William Vinson11 10 June 1661 in Gloucester, Essex County Massachusetts12, son of Francis Vinson and Sara Paulet.  He was born 1610 in England13, and died 17 September 1690 in Gloucester, Essex County Massachusetts14.

Notes for Rachel Varney:

The only record we have of Rachel's first marriage to Thomas Cooke is notice of her presenting an inventory of her late husband's estate on 17 September 1650.  One of the individuals who took inventory of Cooke's estate was Rachels father, William Varney.

The will of Bridget Varney, wife of William Varney of Gloucester, (Essex Probate, Vol 2, p312-313) proved 27 November 1672 states: "I give & bequeath unto my daughter Rachel Vinson (the wife of William Vinson) twenty pounds to be payd out of my estate according as hee the sayd william vinson my Sonne in Law can best order it for her and this to be for my sayd daughter after my decease."

Children of Rachel Varney and William Vinson:

      3.  Cpl. Thomas2 Varney (William1) was born Abt. 1639, and died 04 December 1692 in Chebaco Parish, Ipswich, Essex County Massachusetts22.  He married Abigail Proctor Bef. 1669 in Ipswich, Gloucester or Salem, Essex County Massachusetts23.  She was born Abt. 163923, and died 01 March 1731/32 in Chebacco Parish, Ipswich, Essex County Massachusetts24.

Notes for Cpl. Thomas Varney:

Thomas was apprenticed in his youth to John Hardy of Salem Massachusetts.  John names Thomas in his will, dated 30 March 1652 and proved 30 June 1652:

"Item:  I give unto my said son-in-law [Roger Haskale] all my interest in Thomas Varney my apprentice unless his parents buie his time by payinge the som of seven pound that I pd for his time whch if they shall doe I give the sd som of seven pounds to my sd son-in-law."

The repurchase appears to have taken place.  In the inventory of the estate, even though two other apprentices are mentioned as property, Thomas is not.  It would appear that Thomas had only just begun his apprenticeship with Hardy.

Child of Thomas Varney and Abigail Proctor is:

      4.  Humphrey2 Varney (William1) was born Abt. 1642, and died Aft. 169626.  He married Sarah Starbuck 02 March 1663/64 in Dover, Rockingham County New Hampshire27, daughter of Edward Starbuck.  She died Aft. 169628.

Notes for Humphrey Varney:

Bridget Varney, in her will provided for Thomas Parsons to pay to Humphrey the sum of of 20 Pounds, 5 pounds per year for four years.  He may have been born in Barbados around 1642, a fact as yet unsubstantiated by the compiler.

There is evidence that this is the Humphrey Varney who married, as her third husband, Sarah Storey, daughter of Edward Starbuck, on 2 March 1664 in Dover New Hampshire.

Humphrey was admitted as a inhabitant of Dover New Hampshire on 6 June 1659.  He was taxed at Dover Neck until 1662, and Cocheco in 1665 and afterwards.  He and most of his descendants were Quakers29.

Children of Humphrey Varney and Sarah Starbuck are:

      5.  Rachael3 Langton (Rachel2 Varney, William1)33 was born Abt. 1653 in Ipswich, Essex County Massachusetts34, and died 07 March 1673/74 in Gloucester, Essex County Massachusetts35.  She married Hugh Row 10 June 1667 in Gloucester, Essex County Massachusetts36, son of John Row and Bridget Jeggles.  He was born 1645 in Gloucester, Essex County Massachusetts37, and died 11 December 1696 in Gloucester, Essex County Massachusetts38.

Notes for Rachael Langton:

Rachel Vinson (Langton) is said to be a daughter of William Vinson, as in a deed, he refers to Hugh Row as his Son in Law (Babson).  There is no evidence in the Vital records to directly support this.
