Notes for Rev. Josiah Marshall:
Josiah graduated from Harvard University in 1720.  He was named first School Master of the town of Malden in 1720, but departed for a ministry.  In 1723 he returned to Harvard to obtain his Master's degree.  In 1724 he became Minister in Falmouth Massachusetts.  After separating from his wife, he withdrew from the position.  In 1734, he moved to North Carolina in an unsuccessful attempt to obtain another ministry and trying to escape the scandal of his marriage.  He returned to Boston about 1738 and was made a Schoolmaster at Mendon Massachusetts in that year.

Marriage Notes for Josiah Marshall and Hannah Hatch:
This marriage resulted in a long and painful divorce proceeding, as recorded in Suffolk Court records.

Notes for Ichabod Marshall:
Swan suggests that this Ichabod, listed in Mendon Town records, may have been a child from a relationship Josiah had in North Carolina.

Generation No. 4

      19.  Elizabeth4 Soper (Mary3 Marshall, John2, John1) was born 25 June 1729 in Hull, Suffolk County Massachusetts27, and died 22 March 1783 in Boston, Suffolk County Massachusetts28.  She married (1) Zerrubabel Marshall Bef. 20 October 1752 in Boston, Suffolk County Massachusetts29, son of Josiah Marshall and Hannah Hatch.  He was born Abt. 172529, and died Bef. 176129.  She married (2) Ferrers Shirley 28 March 1761 in Boston, Suffolk County Massachusetts30.  He was born in England, and died Abt. 1765 in Boston, Suffolk County Massachusetts.  She married (3) Henry Snow 17 August 1776 in Boston, Suffolk County Massachusetts31.  He died Abt. September 1778 in Boston, Suffolk County Massachusetts31.  She married (4) Luke Howell 22 June 1780 in Boston, Suffolk County Massachusetts32

Notes for Elizabeth Soper:
Elizabeth was living on Cornhill in Boston when the Great Fire of March 1760 swept through downtown Boston and destroyed her home.  Her name is listed among those who lost their belongings.  Her affidavit lists personal articles valued at 29 Pounds, though she was allowed only 3 pounds, 19 shillings and 6 pence for her loss33.

Elizabeth is mentioned in the will of her third husband, Henry Snow as his "beloved and dutiful wife Elizabeth".  Also mentioned is Elizabeth's son Ferris Shirley, "now living in Merrimack New Hampshire" and her daughter by Zarrubabel, Mary Soper Marshall34.

Her fourth marriage, to Luke Howell, was performed at the same time and at the same place as that of her daughter Mary Soper Marshall to Thomas Giles.

      20.  Zerrubabel4 Marshall (Josiah3, John2, John1) was born Abt. 172535, and died Bef. 176135.  He married Elizabeth Soper Bef. 20 October 1752 in Boston, Suffolk County Massachusetts35, daughter of Benjamin Soper and Mary Marshall.  She was born 25 June 1729 in Hull, Suffolk County Massachusetts35, and died 22 March 1783 in Boston, Suffolk County Massachusetts36.

Notes for Zerrubabel Marshall:
Zarrubabel is supposed to be the son of Josiah by a former marriage.  This is asserted by Vinton in his "Giles Memorial".  Swan, in his "Marshall Memorial", suggests that Zarrubabel is an illegitimate son of Josiah, and was raised by his sister Mary Soper.  Perhaps he was the cause of the ugly scandal of his father's marriage.
