William Lander of Ireland and Some of his Descendants

 Last Updated 30 March 2012

Generation No. 1

@1.  William1 Lander was born Bet. 1780 - 1789 in Ireland, and died Bet. 1830 - 1840.  He married Hannah Pierce 30 April 1805 in Boston, Suffolk County Massachusetts1, daughter of Solomon Pierce and Eunice Farrar.  She was born 17 August 1786 in Townsend, Middlesex County Massachusetts2, and died Aft. 1845.

Notes for William Lander:
William appears in the 1810 US census for ward 3 in Boston.  The household consists of 2 males under 10 (John and unidentified), 1 male 26-44 (William), 1 female under 10 (unidentified), 1 female 16-25 (Hannah) and 1 female 45 or over (this could be Hannah's mother Eunice.)

In the 1820 US Census, William appears in Ward 6 Boston.  The family consists of 2 males under 10 William P, Francis) 1 male 26-44 (William), 1 female 10-15 (unidentified), 1 female 16-25 (unidentified), 2 females 26-44 (Hannah and unidentified)

William appears in the 1830 US Census for Ward 6 in Boston.  The family consists of 1 male 5-10 (Francis), 1 male 10-15 (William P), 1 male 15-20 (John), 1 male 50-60 (William Sr.), 1 female 30-40 (unknown at this time) and 1 female 40-50 (Hannah).  The two youngest girls, Helena and Sarah are not accounted for in the household.

According to the 1880 Census record for his son William Pearce, William was born in Ireland.  The death record for son Francis A indicates William was born in England which for this time is not contradictory.

The probate record for a William Lander of Boston dated 5 May 1835 is not the same individual unless he remarried between 1827 and 1833, the time of his death in New Orleans. The petitioner was William's wife Caroline.

Another William Lander died "a pauper" in Roxbury according to Roxbury VRs and is not likely this William.

Notes for Hannah Pierce:
There were two Hannah Pierce's born in Townsend Massachusetts within 4 months of one another.  One was born 12 April 1786 of Jonathan and Hannah Perham and the other was born 17 August 1786 of Solomon Pierce and Eunice Farrar.  One of these married John Clements from Townsend on 5 March 1805, a second remarkable coincidence since the other married William Lander in Boston on 30 April 1805.  My decision to associate this Hannah with Solomon is based on the fact that Hannah's sister Eunice was living in Boston in 1824 and had married an Irishman.  According to the Town Selectmen, Solomon was not a contributing member of the town, and apparently died a pauper.  This connection is admittedly weak.

The death record of Hannah's daughter Helena Francis indicates Hannah was born in Townsend New Hampshire.  This can be explained because the boundaries of the Town of Townsend were redrawn when the boundary between New Hampshire and Massachusetts was changed, and a part became the town of Brookline New Hampshire.  Hence, many references to Townsend in early records mention Townsend as in New Hampshire.

The death record of Hannah's son Francis A Lander indicates her name as Hannah Peirce, born in Townsend Mass.  This is of interest because the death certificate of Harriett Kenney Lander, wife of Francis, who died on the same day as her husband, indicates her mother was also named Peirce, suggesting maybe they were cousins..

The Boston City Directory for 1845 lists Hannah M Lander, Widow, as living in Washington Square.

@5.  Helena Frances2 Lander (William1) was born Abt. 08 August 1825 in Boston, Suffolk County Massachusetts25, and died 15 July 1904 in Gloucester, Essex County Massachusetts25.  She married (1) Edward E Foley26 11 October, 1844 in Boston, Suffolk County Massachusetts.  He was born abt. 1825 in Nova Scotia, Canada, and died Bet. 1855 - March 1858.  She married (2) Samuel W Mess 29 March 1858 in Gloucester, Essex County Massachusetts27, son of Francis Mess and Abigail Woodbury.  He was born Abt. 23 January 1811 in Baltimore Maryland28, and died 02 June 1899 in Gloucester, Essex County Massachusetts28.

Notes for Helena Frances Lander:
It is curious that after 1854, Helena used the name Fowler in the 1855 Massachusetts Census and the name Farmer in her marriage record to Samuel Mess.  Her children all retained the Fowler name in Gloucester.  One likely reason is that Edward may have abandoned the family and Helena wanted to keep him from locating them if and when he returned.

The 1850 US Census lists Helena living with husband Edward E in Boston Ward 1 with children Catherine 5, William 4, Caroline 2, and Adelaide L, 4/12.

The 1855 Massachusetts census lists Helena Fowler, aged 30,  living alone in Boston Ward 3 with children as follows:  Hannah 10, William 9, Caroline 7, Louisa 5, Edward 1.  All born in Mass.  Helena indicates she is married (not widowed) 31,

In the marriage record to Samuel W Mess, Helena's name is clearly given as Helena Francis Farmer, and the Commonwealth has indexed her name as such.  This is a mystery, as there is no other evidence of a marriage to a man named Farmer.

In the death record of her son Charles C F Mess, Helena is called Eleanor, and is said to have been born in Boston.

In the marriage record of her daughter Anna, her name is given as Elena.

In her death record, Helena Lander lists her parents as William Lander of Boston and --- Pearce from Townsend New Hampshire.  She was last living at 53 Mansfield Street in Gloucester.
